Last week we saw how flimsy our campaign finance laws are when one candidate for Illinois Attorney General circumvented the rules to take $100,000 from a tobacco magnate. Today we learned that another contender has loaned himself close to $300,000, which triggered another law that removes the campaign finance limits for every candidate in the race.
This changes everything.
There are no longer any maximum contributions for individuals, corporations, PACs and labor organizations. Any of my opponents will be eligible to accept unlimited sums of money between now and the election, and you can expect them to take full advantage.
I don’t have any tobacco magnates lined up to give me six-figure checks, but I do have committed supporters like you that can help me fight back.
As the outsider in this race I knew that I would never have the support of corporate lobbyists and deep pocketed special interests.
Happy holidays to you and your family.
