I am thrilled to share with you that I’ve officially filed my petitions to seek the Democratic nomination for the office of Attorney General – but getting on the ballot is only the first step.
I’m up against some tough competition in a field of candidates comprised primarily of the usual political insiders. Now more than ever, we need a qualified and experienced leader from outside the political machine to run the Office of Attorney General. Unlike the insiders, I will enter the office without any allegiances or debts owed, which is essential to operating the office with independence and integrity.
When I went to law school, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my professional life to serving my community, and that’s exactly what I’ve done with my legal career — both in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and as the Chief Administrator of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability for the City of Chicago.
As Attorney General, I will stand firm to protect our citizens from the unconstitutional policies of the Trump Administration, reform our criminal justice system, protect the civil rights, health and well-being of our citizens, and make state government more transparent and ethical.
Today we filed our nominating petitions - a 643 page document with the maximum allowed 10,000 signatures - and in a few weeks, we will face another test with our first fundraising deadline of this campaign. I look forward to seeing you soon out on the campaign trail.
